Founder's Story
A Journey of Resilience:
The Pu'er Spirit
The brand's origin began with a sudden career break, and a willful choice to simply be true to myself. For a decade in the North American tech industry, I never stopped running, throwing myself wholeheartedly into my work as a data scientist. I experienced the highlights of career advancement, alongside the relentless demands of a high-pressure environment, eventually reaching a point of emotional exhaustion and workplace burnout.
So, I decided to press pause and ask myself anew:
Who am I? What do I love to do? What should my next step be?
It was during this career gap that I founded Southern Frontier, a lifestyle brand dedicated to high-quality, ancient tree Pu'er tea. I chose Pu'er because, during my time at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, I was deeply influenced by my father to appreciate Yunnan's greatest treasure. True ancient tree Pu'er is harvested from wild tea trees with zero pesticides, accounting for less than 5% of China's Pu'er tea market.
While its unique "getting better with age" quality brought it fame, Pu'er suffered from market speculation in the early 2000s and became deeply misunderstood. Today, with a quality that stands the test of time, Pu'er is returning to the public eye. This resilience and vitality is exactly what I call the "Pu'er Spirit."
My mission is to pass on this spirit to more people—breaking the "mystery" of Pu'er, connecting its cultural value with fair market prices, and making it youthful, transparent, and standardized. This is the fundamental DNA and cultural mission of Southern Frontier.

Sheng Pu'er

Sun-dried and naturally aged, Sheng Pu'er retains the vibrant, untamed energy of the mountain. It features a bright, golden liquor with complex floral notes, a refreshing astringency that transforms into a lingering sweetness, and an aroma that evolves gracefully over decades.

A Heritage of Centuries
The Art of Pu'er
From ancient mountain gardens to your cup, every leaf of Pu'er tea follows an eight-step journey perfected over centuries. Each step is a deliberate act of craftsmanship that defines the tea's character.

The Origin
Untouched Ancient Mountains
Our journey begins deep in the pristine, high-altitude forests of Yunnan. Here, wild tea trees — many over a century old — grow naturally without human intervention.
Because these ancient trees thrive in a biodiverse, wild ecosystem, they require absolutely no pesticides or fertilizers. Every leaf is meticulously hand-picked by local artisans, ensuring that from the very first step, our Pu'er is completely free of heavy metal pollution and synthetic chemicals.
From Leaf to Legacy
The Eight Steps of Pu'er
Plucking
Fresh leaves are harvested, typically focusing on a bud and the first two to three leaves, which contain the ideal balance of compounds for flavor and aging.
Withering
The freshly picked leaves are spread thinly on bamboo trays in a shaded, well-ventilated area for several hours. This reduces their water content, making them soft and pliable enough to survive the high heat of the next step without shattering.

Kill-Green
The defining step of Pu'er chemistry. Leaves are tossed in a hot iron wok. Unlike green tea, where the heat destroys all enzymes, Pu'er's kill-green is deliberately gentler and shorter, leaving some enzymes alive — these are the catalysts for future aging.
Rolling
The cooled leaves are rolled and twisted by hand or machine. This breaks cell walls and shapes them into strips, releasing essential oils and juices to the surface, which later contribute to the tea's body and depth during brewing.
Sun Drying
This is the critical fork in the road that separates Pu'er from all other teas. The rolled leaves are spread out under the Yunnan sun. Unlike oven-drying, solar drying preserves the living microorganisms and residual enzymes — the biological engine of Pu'er's transformation over time.
Weighing & Steaming
Precise portions of loose máochá are weighed (commonly 200g or 357g) and briefly steamed to make them pliable and slightly sticky, ready for compression.
Shaping & Pressing
The steamed leaves are placed in a cloth bag, twisted tight, and pressed into their final form — cakes (bǐng), bricks (zhuān), or tuó bowls. Traditional stone pressing leaves the interior slightly loose, aiding even post-fermentation and aging.
Drying & Wrapping
The compressed shapes are air-dried in warm, ventilated rooms for several days to weeks. Finally, each cake is individually wrapped in traditional cotton paper, which allows the tea to breathe during decades of aging while protecting it from light and contamination.
Health & Heritage
China's most prized tea category — where clean-label health benefits meet living investment.
Pu'er offers a spectrum of health benefits depending on its type. Sheng Pu'er is naturally rich in tea polyphenols and catechins, offering powerful antioxidants. Shu Pu'er undergoes microbial fermentation, making it gentle on the stomach, an aid to digestion, and naturally low in caffeine. But beyond its physical benefits, Pu'er is the only tea that improves with age — like fine wine, its flavor deepens and its value appreciates over time.
